Sometimes you can tell how a shoot is going to go because you have to negotiate time allocation to take the photographs before you arrive on the day. Usually, if it's in an office, and time is tight, its a challenge to get a bit of magic.
On the day of the Vlissingens we'd all got the address wrong and as I was a good 30 minutes early I decided to walk from Marble arch to Paddington as it was a nice day. I passed ex prime minister Tony Blairs house and talked to the armed security guard that I thought it was nice that he'd put a 'Vote Labour' poster in his front window like many households up and down the country before an election. The officer replied, 'what are they voting here'? We both laughed and I kept on walking navigating with memory and phone to the right location.
As I arrived downs stairs I saw an older couple sitting in the office and assumed they were the couple I was to photograph as the PA and secretary were stressed.
I talked about the weather and the Blair household and they both laughed and noticed it relieved lifted the air. I usually wait for the journalist to arrive before taking photographs but this time asked to start as I thought she would be late.
They were willing as I sweated to pose in front of the window as I tried to make them look like a Rembrandt painting as I'd heard they were patrons. Then the journalist arrived and I explained I'd like to look for a location outside.
I couldn't find anything London looking nearby so I asked if I could take them in a black cab taxi to Marble arch and started the shoot in the taxi, (you never know) Then at marble arch we were a little dogged by cyclists and beggars but they were brilliant shrugging off problems and being helpful before having to catch a flight.
A good couple who looked as in love now as they ever have been.
